Houghton Lodge

Houghton Lodge, Nr Stockbridge, Hampshire. A Romantic and picturesque gothic style Georgian "Cottage Ornee" , built in 1798 when the gentry from London were looking for a small 'country retreat', however despite their desire for a smaller country house it still included a courtyard and coach houses… Situated on a hill overlooking the River Test, with sweeping lawns running down to the banks of the river, it is in the most enchanting position, uniquely with extensive views over water meadows with no telegraph posts in site!

Interior rooms are inter-connected and enjoy views which have remained the same for 200 years. All the downstairs rooms enjoy Gothic style French windows that open directly into the garden. Downstairs there is a beautiful dining room with Chinese wallpaper depicting birds and flowers, a domed and circular music room, a stunning drawing room and a second drawing room with double fire places. Leading to the second floor is a beautiful staircase. On this floor there are a number of different and equally spacious and large bedrooms. The original kitchen is still operational with large cream aga and high ceilings. There are cellars beneath the house.
