Mapledurham has adapted successfully to change over many years. Change at Mapledurham has evolved gradually, often as a result of historical events such as the Civil War and Catholic Emancipation. Unusually, it has been brought about not by demolition but by alteration. Thus the original half timbering in the Old Manor House still exists behind the brick skin built many years later, and in the watermill the old roofing timbers remain in place even after the extensions were built.
